Surah As-Sajdah opens with three letters: Alif-Lām-Mīm. Like several other chapters of the Quran, it begins with letters whose full meaning is known only to Allah. The scholars differed regarding the wisdom behind these letters. Many scholars held that their ultimate meaning is known only to Allah. Among the lessons scholars have drawn from them is that human knowledge is limited while Allah's knowledge encompasses all things.

Before the surah discusses certainty, creation, resurrection, or prostration, it begins with humility. The believer starts by acknowledging that Allah knows what we do not know. This prepares the heart for what comes next: “The revelation of this Book is—beyond doubt—from the Lord of all worlds.”

Allah immediately establishes the source of the Quran. It is not poetry. It is not philosophy. It is not the product of human imagination. It is revelation from the Lord of all worlds. The opening verses focus first on certainty before discussing anything else. Guidance begins when a person recognizes where truth comes from and approaches it with humility.

However, the disbelievers responded differently. “Or do they say, ‘He has fabricated it?’”

Rather than submitting to the truth of revelation, they questioned its source. The Quran repeatedly shows that guidance is not merely a matter of evidence. It also depends upon the condition of the heart. A heart that is humble before Allah becomes receptive to guidance and ready to commit to it. A heart that resists submission struggles to benefit even when signs are clear.

Allah then explains the purpose of revelation: “It is the truth from your Lord... so they may be rightly guided.” The Quran was not revealed merely to inform people. It was revealed to guide them. Its purpose is transformation. It teaches people who Allah is, why they were created, and how to return to Him. This is one of the reasons the surah is called As-Sajdah (The Prostration).

True knowledge of Allah does not stop at the mind. It reaches the heart. And when it reaches the heart, it produces humility, obedience, and worship. The opening of the surah, therefore, teaches a powerful lesson: Guidance begins when a person approaches Allah's words with humility rather than self-sufficiency. The believer does not stand above revelation and judge it. The believer stands before revelation and allows it to guide them.

“No one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises him.”
