After declaring that Allah is One, the Surah says: Allah is As-Samad.

This magnificent Name has been explained by the scholars of tafsir with complementary meanings. It points to Allah's absolute perfection, complete mastery, self-sufficiency, and the reality that all creation depends upon Him.

As-Samad is the Master whose mastery is complete. He is perfect in His names, attributes, and actions. He is the One to whom all creation turns for its needs. He is the One who needs no one, while everyone needs Him.

The heavens need Him. The earth needs Him. The angels need Him. Human beings need Him. The believer needs Him. The sinner needs Him. The body needs Him. The heart needs Him.
Every breath, every moment of guidance, every protection, every opening, every mercy, and every provision depends on Him.

This name teaches the servant humility. We are not self-sufficient. We cannot keep our hearts firm upon guidance except by Allah's permission and help. We do not guarantee our next breath. We do not control guidance, provision, safety, forgiveness, or the final outcome. We are poor before Allah in every moment.

This name also teaches reliance. If Allah is As-Samad, then every need ultimately returns to Him. We may use worldly means, but the heart must not depend on the means as though they act independently.

A doctor may treat, but Allah heals. A job may be a means, but Allah provides. A person may help, but Allah enables. A door may appear open, but Allah is the One who opens it.

The heart that knows As-Samad turns to Allah first. It asks Him before asking creation. It depends on Him while using the means He allows. It does not exaggerate people, wealth, status, medicine, or planning. All of these are created and dependent.

As-Samad also refutes false intermediaries and false attachments. If all creation needs Allah, then no created being can be treated as independent. No angel, prophet, saint, ruler, or force can fulfill needs apart from Allah’s will. All are servants before the Self-Sufficient Master.

Reflecting on this Name should become a daily source of comfort, leading you to seek refuge in Allah and call upon Him. Whenever the heart is anxious, needy, confused, or weak, it should remember: Allah is As-Samad.

When I need help, comfort, forgiveness, provision, or protection, do I turn to Allah first?

Action Point

Choose one worry today and say: Ya Ahad As-Samad, I only place my reliance upon You. O Allah, whatever my worry, I entrust it to You.

Then take the right means while keeping your heart attached to Allah.
