The Quran is guidance in every sense.

• Its recitation is guidance.
• Its meanings are guidance.
• Its commands are guidance.
• Its stories are guidance.
• Its warnings are guidance.
• Its promises are guidance.
• Its effect on the heart is guidance.

But when we speak about the science of Quranic guidance, we are referring to a more specific field of study. We are not simply saying that the Quran guides, because that is already clear. Rather, we are speaking about the careful extraction of the directions, lessons, benefits, and instructions found within the verses of the Quran.

Quranic guidance may be summarized as:

Extracting guidance from Quranic verses, through clear or subtle indications, according to a disciplined scholarly method.

This definition contains three important matters.

First, the subject is the guidance found in the verses. We are looking for what the ayah teaches, directs, corrects, encourages, warns against, or opens for reflection. The goal is not only to explain the words, but to uncover the guidance that flows from them.

Second, this guidance may come through clear or subtle indications. Some guidance is direct and obvious, such as an ayah commanding justice, patience, prayer, or gratitude. Other guidance may be more subtle, drawn from the wording, order, context, connection to other verses, names of Allah mentioned, or the way a story is presented.

Third, this must be done according to a sound method. Quranic guidance is not a space for uncontrolled personal impressions. A person should not force meanings into the Quran or claim guidance without evidence. The guidance must be connected to the verse through language, context, revelation, tafsir, sound principles, and careful understanding.

The subject of this science is the Quranic text after its meaning has been understood. This means Quranic guidance does not replace tafsir. It depends on it. Tafsir explains the meaning of the ayah. Quranic guidance then asks: What direction follows from this meaning? What belief does it strengthen? What action does it call to? What mistake does it correct?

The Quran itself contains two broad kinds of speech: reports and commands. Its reports are true, and its commands are just. From its reports we derive guidance for belief, certainty, and worldview. From its commands and rulings we derive guidance for worship, character, conduct, and life.

So the work of Quranic guidance is to approach the Quran after understanding its meaning, then draw out the guidance that helps the servant believe, worship, reform, and live.
