Good character may be natural in some people, but it can also be acquired. A person may begin impatient and become patient, harsh and become gentle, miserly and become generous, careless and become trustworthy, proud and become humble.

The first path is sound faith. Behavior is the fruit of what the person carries in belief and thought. When belief is correct, character becomes sounder. Faith reminds the servant that Allah sees, commands, rewards, warns, and will judge. It strengthens the will toward good and restrains the soul from evil. Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him) remained steadfast when faced with temptation. Allah says that Yusuf saw a proof from his Lord and that Allah thus turned evil and immorality away from him” (Quran 12:24).

The second path is knowledge. A person must learn the virtues of noble character and the consequences of evil character. When someone knows the beauty of truthfulness and the harm of lying, the honor of modesty and the danger of shamelessness, the sweetness of mercy and the ugliness of cruelty, the heart becomes more willing to change.

The third path is dua. Character is not built by self-confidence alone. The Prophet (peace be upon him) would ask Allah to guide him to the best character and turn bad character away from him” (Sahih Muslim 771a). The servant needs Allah’s help to change what is deeply rooted.

The fourth path is following the best examples. Allah commanded us to follow the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the guidance of the prophets. Reading the lives of prophets, companions, scholars, and righteous people raises the soul because it shows what human beings become when revelation shapes them.

The fifth path is knowing the fruits of good character. When the servant remembers that a good word opens hearts, humility raises, generosity brings blessing, forgiveness brings peace, and truthfulness brings safety, the soul becomes eager.

The sixth path is knowing the consequences of bad character. Oppression destroys, lying exposes, arrogance humiliates, envy burns, betrayal ruins trust, and harsh words create enmity. Knowing consequences helps the servant flee from evil.

The seventh path is disciplining and evaluating the self. A person must train the soul repeatedly. Patience comes by practicing patience. Forbearance comes by forcing the soul to restrain anger. Generosity comes by giving. Truthfulness comes by refusing lies until truth becomes natural.

Good character is therefore a construction project of the soul. It is not built in a day, and it is not preserved without effort.

O Allah, guide me to the best of character, for none guides to its best except You. Turn away from me its worst, for none turns away its worst except You.
