After mentioning Al-Hayy and Al-Qayyum, Ayat al-Kursi removes every thought of weakness from Allah: Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him.

Creation needs sleep. The strongest person becomes tired. The most watchful guardian eventually becomes weak. The most caring parent must rest. But Allah is far above this. His life is perfect. His sustaining care is constant. He is never overtaken by drowsiness or sleep. His knowledge, power, and care over His creation are perfect, and He is never touched by any deficiency.

This meaning brings comfort. The servant sleeps, but Allah never sleeps. The servant is unaware, but Allah is never unaware. The servant cannot fully protect themselves, but Allah preserves all things.

Then the ayah declares His complete ownership: To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.

Everything belongs to Allah. The heavens, the earth, the angels, human beings, jinn, animals, mountains, oceans, stars, and unseen worlds are all His. Nothing exists outside His ownership. Nothing owns itself independently. Whatever we possess is only a trust.

This corrects the heart’s view of creation. How can something owned be worshipped alongside the Owner? How can something dependent be treated as an independent source of help? How can the heart attach itself completely to what cannot preserve itself?

Then the ayah declares His complete authority: Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission?

No one speaks before Allah except by His permission. No angel, prophet, righteous servant, or close friend of Allah can intercede independently. Intercession is real, but it is not an independent power. It is a mercy Allah permits for whom He wills, in the way He wills, when He wills.

This purifies Tawhid. The heart hopes in Allah first. It asks Allah directly. It knows that all mercy, permission, forgiveness, and acceptance belong to Him alone.

So this part of Ayat al-Kursi teaches three foundations: Allah is free from weakness, Allah owns everything, and Allah’s authority is absolute. The believer responds with reliance, humility, and freedom from false attachments.

Do I rely on created beings as though they possess independent power, or do I remember that all creation belongs to Allah?

Before sleeping tonight, and when reciting the phrase "Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him," remind yourself:
I sleep, but Allah never sleeps. I am owned, and all things are owned by Him.
