Commentary

This is a confession of the disbelievers that comes too late, after the opportunity for accepting the truth and acting upon it has ceased. As a result, they are condemned to everlasting punishment. The verse tells us of the heedlessness they had been in, such that they were veiled from using their senses and intellect. 

Guidance 

“If only we had listened or used our reason.”

This proves that listening sincerely and reflecting with sound intellect leads to guidance. Islam does not encourage blind faith by simply adopting its ideas and practices; rather, faith is based upon a realisation borne out of listening to revelation and a robust intellectual engagement with Allah’s words. 

Don’t postpone learning and studying the Quran, thinking that you will heed the guidance of the Quran someday. Make a firm commitment and proactively engage with Allah’s Book by listening to it and internalising its guidance.
