A Heart Anchored by Revelation: How to Build a Strong, Living Relationship with the Quran

A Heart Anchored by Revelation: How to Build a Strong, Living Relationship with the Quran

Opening: The Path the Quran Offers the Believer

The Quran is the believer’s lifeline to guidance, clarity, and steadfastness. Yet many of us long for a deeper connection with it. We recite but wish for greater understanding; we memorize but desire to learn the meaning; we learn the meaning but struggle to implement it. We yearn for a relationship with the Quran that softens the heart and transforms our lives.

Allah reminds us that this Book did not come to be a text on our shelves, but a companion in our lives. The journey with the Quran begins with sincere intention and unfolds through five interconnected acts: recitation, understanding, reflection, application, and memorization. These form the path of a believer whose life is shaped by Allah’s words.

Recitation: The First Door to a Connection With the Quran

Reciting the Quran is the foundational act of drawing near to Allah. It awakens the heart and prepares it for understanding and reflection.

Allah, the Most Exalted, says:

Those We have given the Book follow it as it should be followed. It is they who ˹truly˺ believe in it. As for those who reject it, it is they who are the losers.
–Surah Al-Baqarah [2:121]

True recitation is careful, measured, and intentional. The Messenger of Allah (praise and peace be upon him) said,

“The one skilled in the Quran will be with the noble, righteous angels, and the one who recites the Quran and struggles in doing so receives two rewards.”
(Sahih Muslim, 798)

The Messenger of Allah (praise and peace be upon him) also said,

“Recite the Quran, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection as an intercessor for its companions (those who recited and acted upon it).

Recite the two illuminating chapters (Az-Zahrawayn): Al-Baqarah and Surah āli 'Imran, for they will come on the Day of Resurrection as if they are two clouds, or as if they are two shades, or as if they are two flocks of birds in formation, pleading on behalf of their companions.

Recite Surah Al-Baqarah, for taking it (i.e., reciting and acting upon it) is a source of blessing, and abandoning it is a source of sorrow, and the magicians cannot prevail against it.” (Sahih Muslim, 804)

We should recite the Quran daily because every verse recited is a seed of guidance planted in our hearts, and it is one of the most important steps in connecting with it.
Our goal should be to recite the entire Quran every month.

The Messenger of Allah (praise and peace be upon him) said to ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr:

"Recite the Quran in a month.”
He said, “I have strength for more than that.”

He said, “Then recite it in twenty days.”
He said, “I have strength for more than that.”

He said, “Then recite it in fifteen days.”
He said, “I have strength for more than that.”

He said, “Then recite it in ten days.”
He said, “I have strength for more than that.”

He said, “Then recite it in seven days, and do not go beyond that.”
(Abu Dawud 1388, and it is a ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth)

If we are struggling to recite the Quran fluently, we should find a qualified teacher to teach us how to recite the Quran with tajweed. The Messenger of Allah (praise and peace be upon him) said,

“Learn the Quran from four: from Ibn Mas‘ud, from Salim the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah, from Mu‘adh ibn Jabal, and from Ubayy ibn Ka‘b.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 3808)

This hadith highlights the importance of learning the Quran from qualified teachers.

Learning and teaching the Quran are two of the best deeds we can do and will make us from the best of this Ummah.

The Messenger of Allah (praise and peace be upon him) said,

“The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.” (Sahih al Bukhari, 5027)

Understanding: Seeking the Meaning Allah Intended

Recitation softens the heart, and understanding the Quran fills the heart with light. The believer must seek to know what Allah, the Most Exalted, is saying.

Allah, the Most Exalted, says:

٢

Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran so that you may understand.
–Surah Yusuf [12:2]

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made a special dua for Ibn Abbas:

“O Allah, give him understanding of the religion and teach him interpretation (of the Quran).”
(Musnad Ahmad 3102, authentic)

We should make the same dua:

Allāhumma faqqihnā fī d-dīn wa ‘allimnā at-ta’wīl.
"O Allah, give us understanding of the religion and teach us the interpretation of the Quran.”

Understanding the Quran comes through learning Quranic vocabulary, studying a tafsir, even if basic, and asking knowledgeable teachers. It is a lifelong journey, and every believer is invited to it.

The tabi‘ee Mujahid, may Allah be pleased with him, said,

“I read the entire Musḥaf to Ibn Abbas three separate times, from beginning to end, stopping him at every single verse, and asking him about it.”
(Reported by at-Tabari in his Tafsir, no. 108, and Adh-Dhahabi graded its chain as hasan/sound)

Ibn Mas'ood (may Allah be pleased with him) said,

"A man among us, when he learned ten verses, he would not go beyond them until he knew their meanings and acted upon them.”
(Tafsir At-Tabari, no. 81, with an authentic chain of narration)

Reflection: Allowing the Quran to Reach the Heart

Reflection is the heart of a transformative relationship with the Quran. Allah says that this is the purpose of revelation itself. He, the Most Exalted, says,

˹This is˺ a blessed Book which We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ so that they may contemplate its verses, and people of reason may be mindful.
–Surah Sad [38:29]

Allah, the Most Exalted, also says,

Do they not then reflect on the Quran? Had it been from anyone other than Allah, they would have certainly found in it many inconsistencies.
–Surah An-Nisa [4:82]

He, the Most Exalted, also says,

Do they not then reflect on the Quran? Or are there locks upon their hearts?
–Surah Muhammad [47:24]

Reflection on the Quran gives us the opportunity to rectify our hearts.

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said, "In summary, nothing is more beneficial for the heart than reading the Quran with contemplation and deep thought... It is that which brings about love, yearning, fear, hope, turning back to Allah in repentance, reliance, contentment, submission, gratitude, patience, and all the other states through which the heart lives and achieves completeness.”

Likewise, it restrains one from all the blameworthy qualities and actions that lead to the heart's corruption and destruction. If people knew what is in reading the Quran with contemplation, they would abandon everything else for it. If one reads with deep thought until he passes by a verse that he needs for the healing of his heart, he should repeat it, even if it be a hundred times, or even for an entire night.

Reading one verse with contemplation and understanding is better than reading an entire completion (of the Quran) without contemplation and understanding. It is more beneficial for the heart and more conducive to achieving faith and tasting the sweetness of the Quran. This was the habit of the Salaf (early pious generations). One of them would repeat a single verse until the morning. It is authentically established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up (in prayer) repeating a single verse until the morning, which was His saying,

If You punish them, they belong to You after all. But if You forgive them, You are surely the Almighty, All-Wise.”
–Surah Al-Ma'idah [5:118]

[Reported by An-Nasā’ee, no. 1010, Ibn Mājah, no. 1350: Hasan].

Thus, reading the Quran with deep thought is the basis for the heart's soundness. For this reason, Ibn Mas'ud said, 'Do not scatter the Quran (read it rapidly) like scattering poetry, nor throw it out like rotten dates. Stop at its wonders, and move the hearts with it.' (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, 8733).

Ibn Mas'ud also said, 'Read the Quran, and move the hearts with it, and let not the end of the surah be the sole concern of any one of you.' (Shu'ab al-Iman by Al-Bayhaqi, 1884).

Ayyub narrated from Abu Jamrah, who said: “I said to Ibn 'Abbas: ‘I am a fast reader; I complete the Quran in three (days).’ He replied, ‘For me to read one Surah from the Quran in one night, contemplating and reciting it slowly, is more beloved to me than to read the Quran as you read it.’” (Al-Sunan al-Kubra by Al-Bayhaqi 2466). (Miftāḥ Dār As-Sa‘ādah by Ibn Al-Qayyim, vol. 1, p. 536)

Reflecting upon the Quran brings our hearts to life, and it fills our hearts with the love of Allah, the Most Exalted, and His Book.

Application: Living the Quran Daily

The final step, and the purpose behind the previous four steps, is to live by what we learn. Allah, the Most Exalted, says,

٣

Follow what has been sent down to you from your Lord, and do not take others as guardians besides Him. How seldom are you mindful!
–Surah Al-A'raf [7:3]

And He, the Most Exalted, also says,

The example of those who were entrusted with ˹observing˺ the Torah but failed to do so, is that of a donkey carrying books. How evil is the example of those who reject Allah’s signs! For Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
–Surah Al-Jumu'ah [62:5]

Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "Thus, He compared the one whom He, the Glorified, entrusted with His Book—to believe in it, contemplate it, act upon it, and call others to it—yet who then violated that trust and bore it only 'on the surface of the heart,' to a donkey. His recitation, devoid of contemplation, understanding, adherence, or submission to its authority and dictates, is like a donkey carrying a heavy load of books on its back without knowing what is in them; its only benefit is the mere effort of carrying the weight. Likewise, such a person’s benefit from the Book of Allah is like that of a donkey's benefit from the books upon its back. Even though this parable was originally applied to the Jews, it is, in terms of its meaning, applicable to anyone who is entrusted with the Quran but neglects to act upon it, fails to fulfill its rights, and does not observe it with the observance it deserves." (I‘lām Al-Muwaqqi‘een, vol. 1, p. 331).

Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned in his Tafsir (no. 8885) with his chain of narration that a man came to Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud and said, “Give me advice.” He replied, “When you hear Allah saying: O you who believe, then give it your full attention, for it is either a command to something good or a prohibition from something evil.”

Acting upon the Quran means taking every verse that can be applied and, according to sound understanding, applying it to your life. Whether the verses cover establishing the prayer, giving the zakāh, giving charity, showing mercy, guarding the tongue, honoring parents, avoiding sins, turning to Allah during times of hardship and ease, we can apply each and every one in our lives. A heart truly transforms when the guidance of the Quran turns into action.

Memorization: Preserving the Words of Allah in Our Hearts

Memorization is not only for children or those who attend special programs. Whenever we memorize even one verse, it is a means for Allah to elevate us. Allah, the Most Exalted, says,

But this ˹Quran˺ is ˹a set of˺ clear revelations ˹preserved˺ in the hearts of those gifted with knowledge. And none denies Our revelations except the ˹stubborn˺ wrongdoers.
–Surah Al-'Ankabut [29:49]

When we memorize the Quran, our hearts become a vessel for the words of Allah. This has a profound effect on our character and faith.

The more we memorize and live by the Quran, the closer and stronger our connection to Allah becomes. Every ayah we memorize of the Quran will, by Allah’s permission, be a means to elevate us in the levels of Paradise. This is a beautiful motivation to busy ourselves with the memorization of the Quran.

The Messenger of Allah (praise and peace be upon him) said,

“It will be said to the companion of the Quran (on the Day of Judgment): 'Recite, ascend (in rank), and recite slowly and clearly just as you used to recite slowly and clearly in the world, for your station will be at the last verse you recite.'”
(At-Tirmidhi 2914 and others and graded sound/ḥasan)

A Simple Path to Begin Today

  • Commit to a daily amount of Quran that you recite. Start with 5 pages a day, and build up to 20 pages a day slowly but surely.

  • Commit to a daily amount of translation of the meanings of the Quran that you read.

  • Commit to a daily amount of the Quran that you reflect upon.

  • While you are reading the translation of the meanings of the Quran, write down qualities and actions that you know you need to work on that Allah mentions in the Quran. Make it your goal to work on implementing these qualities and actions.

  • Commit to a daily amount of Quran that you memorize and review.

Small steps with sincerity and consistency build an unshakeable relationship with the Quran.

Dua

Allahumma aj‘al al-Qurana rabī‘a qulūbinā, wa nūra sudūrina, wa jilā’a aḥzāninā, wa dhahāba humūminā
O Allah, make the Quran the spring of our hearts, the light of our chests, the remover of our sorrows, and the remover of our worries.
(Hisn al-Muslim 120)
